With the rising number of COVID cases in china, more and more medical workers are being dispatched to communities in Shanghai, China. These medical workers are typically dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE).
This PPE covers the worker from head to toe, leaving only a small slit for vision, otherwise removing the individuality of the person and making interactions less human. To lighten the mood, local residents have begun to use the term Baymax (big white) to describe them.
Baymax is a character from Disney’s 2014 film Big Hero 6. He is a healthcare robot created by Tadashi Hamada, and is the personal healthcare companion of the film’s protagonist, Hiro Hamada.
This is literally translated to “big white” and is being used because of the stark similarity to the puffy marshmallow looking individuals that can be seen all over Shanghai.
